INTRODUCTION:

About Inova Healthcare

As Northern Virginia’s largest non-profit healthcare provider and the region’s most recognized for excellence, Inova’s 20,000 team members serve more than two million patient visits each year through an integrated network of hospitals, primary and specialty care practices, urgent care centers, outpatient services, and destination institutes.

The Problem

As a large, multi-site healthcare system, Inova has hundreds of modalities in different locations sending to multiple target systems. They often encountered various network speed issues at various locations. When this happened, images from the patient scans were slow to be sent to the PACS and the VNA. This prevented the staff and the source modality from moving to a new patient until the modality sent the current patient.

The imaging network that supported this growing organization was slow, lacked efficient recovery tools, and did not support the centralized configuration and efficient troubleshooting of image distribution. Examination reviews and imaging workflows get disrupted when studies do not arrive at a target destination, causing clinical, and IT resources to wait through a lengthy troubleshooting and resolution process.

The Solution

With the Silverback® Workflow Engine positioned between the modalities and target PACS and VNA, Inova now has a centralized, intelligent workflow engine to monitor and configure their imaging network at any time from any place. Leveraging intelligent and customization tools within the platform, consisting of:

  • Set customized logic profiles for image distribution throughout the entire organization.
  • Leveraged reports and alerting tools to track network performance.
  • Configured the system to ensure dynamic failover at any time.
  • Managed storage requirements by location to account for different workflows and volumes.
  • Set compression protocols by modality to ensure optimized network resources in transmission.
  • Customized a central dashboard to view and analyze all sites and systems from modality to the cloud.

“With Silverback®, we now have a dynamic solution to manage and monitor study distribution throughout our imaging network.  From design to deployment, the DataFirst team provided us with the expertise and support to achieve all our objectives and timelines.”

Looking Ahead

With the DataFirst dedicated support team, the entire project was scoped, configured, installed, tested, and put into production in a few short weeks to help resolve bottlenecks and improve workflow within the health system.
